How to use this calculator
- Align the week start with Sunday and combine the service hours you want to review.
- Enter actual hours for all recipients, keeping separately paid travel time outside the service-hour card.
- Review the forty-hour overtime message and sixty-six-hour warning, then compare with your authorized hours and any approved exemption.
Formula
IHSS weekly overtime hours = max(0, service hours − forty), paid at 1.5× in this model. For one recipient with one provider, the weekly authorization limit is monthly authorized hours ÷ four. A 283-hour authorization divided by four is 70:45.
Worked examples
Five nine-hour service days
Schedule: 9:00 + 9:00 + 9:00 + 9:00 + 9:00 of net worked time. The engine calculates 45:00 (45.00 hours).
Regular: 40:00 (40.00 h); overtime: 5:00 (5.00 h); double time: 0:00 (0.00 h). At $24.00 per hour, estimated gross pay is $1,140.00.
Seven ten-hour days: review combined limit
Schedule: 10:00 + 10:00 + 10:00 + 10:00 + 10:00 + 10:00 + 10:00 of net worked time. The engine calculates 70:00 (70.00 hours).
Regular: 40:00 (40.00 h); overtime: 30:00 (30.00 h); double time: 0:00 (0.00 h). At $24.00 per hour, estimated gross pay is $2,040.00.
Forty-hour overtime and sixty-six-hour limit
The IHSS workweek runs from Sunday at 12:00 AM through Saturday at 11:59 PM. Overtime applies above forty hours in that week; this helper does not use California daily overtime for IHSS. For a provider serving multiple recipients, the combined maximum is sixty-six hours per week unless an exemption applies. Approved exemptions can allow up to ninety hours per week and 360 per month. The warning cannot determine whether your individual exemption or authorization permits a particular schedule.
Authorized care, travel, and official submission
A single-recipient, single-provider situation uses the recipient’s monthly authorized hours divided by four for the weekly maximum, rather than automatically applying the multiple-recipient sixty-six-hour limit. Travel directly between recipients on the same day can be paid separately through SOC 2255, up to seven hours per week, and does not count against that sixty-six-hour limit. This calculator does not prepare SOC 2255 or submit a timesheet. Use the state’s ETS/EVV system for official submission and retain your authorization records.
Check recipients together
When planning service for several recipients, combine the relevant service-hour records for the workweek before checking the warning. Looking at each recipient separately can hide a combined-hours issue. Keep the authorization and any approved exemption available alongside the estimate; a generic warning cannot resolve those personal limits. Record travel in its separate process rather than adding it to the service total simply to see a larger gross-pay figure on this independent helper.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this page use federal-style weekly allocation?
The verified IHSS rule is time-and-a-half above forty workweek hours, with no daily overtime model here. The rule selector is fixed on this helper to avoid applying ordinary California daily thresholds by mistake.
Does a sixty-six-hour warning mean my timesheet is invalid?
It flags the combined multiple-recipient limit for review. A single-recipient authorization or approved exemption can change the relevant limit. The tool has no access to your case information and cannot approve the schedule.
Should I enter travel between recipients in this card?
Keep separately paid travel out of this service-hour estimate. Verified travel provisions use SOC 2255 and a separate seven-hour weekly limit; those records need their own review.
