How to use this tool
- Enter a valid starting clock time using AM/PM or 24-hour notation.
- Enter the ending clock time; an earlier value means the following day.
- Read the elapsed duration, then use the breaks calculator if you need to exclude unpaid intervals.
Formula
Elapsed minutes = end minutes − start minutes. If the end precedes the start, add 1,440 minutes before subtracting. Convert the duration to H:MM using whole hours and remaining minutes, or divide by sixty for decimal hours.
Worked examples
Engine check: an eight-and-a-half-hour interval
Schedule: 8:30 of net worked time. The engine calculates 8:30 (8.50 hours).
Regular: 8:30 (8.50 h); overtime: 0:00 (0.00 h); double time: 0:00 (0.00 h). At $24.00 per hour, estimated gross pay is $204.00.
Measure the interval you intended
Clock times repeat every day, so two values alone cannot identify a multi-day event. This tool treats an earlier ending clock as the next day and a matching endpoint as a zero-minute interval. That convention is useful for ordinary shifts, travel windows, and evening tasks. If you need an interval longer than one overnight cycle, use dated records and break the task into known portions rather than expecting a clock-only input to recover missing dates.
Choose elapsed time or worked time
The difference between two endpoints includes everything between them. A lunch, a pause, or a trip away remains part of elapsed time unless you remove it. For worked hours after unpaid breaks, follow the related breaks calculator and enter those deductions explicitly. For adding several independent lengths of time, use the hours and minutes tool instead. Deciding whether you need a clock difference or a sum of durations prevents a common input mismatch.
Check the notation at each endpoint
An ambiguous value such as 9:00 is interpreted as a clock hour without an afternoon marker. Include PM for an evening finish or use a twenty-four-hour value such as 21:00. If a result seems almost a day too long, check whether one endpoint has the wrong half of the day. The automatic overnight convention is useful only when those endpoints represent the actual sequence. Correct the clock values before interpreting the decimal output.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate an overnight duration?
Yes. For example, a late-evening start followed by an early-morning finish rolls the end forward one day. Check the AM/PM values if an unexpectedly long result appears.
Can I enter more than twenty-four hours?
The clock-difference tool accepts times of day, not multi-day lengths. Use the duration addition tool for quantities such as twenty-seven hours and thirty minutes.
Why does 1:30 become 1.50 decimal hours?
Thirty minutes is half of sixty minutes. A decimal value describes a fraction of an hour; the colon format preserves the hour-and-minute notation you would read on a duration display.
